The music scene in London has been as vibrant as it is diverse for decades and continues to grow in popularity. Here's a look at some of the hottest music venues in the area:
London West End: This collection of theatres regularly produces musicals, and is home more often than not to a large array of box office theatre successes. Highly recommended for those with a taste in musicals who happen to be touring the city. The West End is currently showing such popular musicals as "The Book of Mormon" and "Bodyguard."
Bush Hall: Extraordinary musical performances of all types have taken place inside this theatre since its inception in 2001. Though a fairly recent addition to the city, it should not be missed during a visit. Bush Hall rapidly gained a reputation for excellence in the early 2000s, and has been building on that reputation through regular appearances of celebrity musicians and masters of performance. It is renowned for its atmosphere and a top show is virtually guaranteed on a nightly basis.
The Half Moon: Located near Putney Bridge, this pub is an historic establishment and has featured live music across many decades, including early acts of bands such as U2 and the Rolling stones. Kate Bush also began her performances here, continuing the pub's tradition of solid musical performances.
The Black Sheep: Another infamous pub. Situated in Croyden, this venue hosts a broad range of music from various techno and dubstep artists toalternative rock. It has won numerous awards for its musical performances. This pub defitinely caters to young patrons who follow the latest trends in indiemusic.
Union Chapel: As the name suggests, this venue is, in fact, a Church. It has been building musical notoriety by hosting performances by artists like Amy Winehouse, and has been steadily gaining recognition in the musical community of London. Proceeds from these events go to benefit projects for the homeless. Also expect seating for these events to be somewhat limited as the chapel has not been expanded to accomodate a theatre-sized audience.
Tabernacle: This venue is specifically geared towards Latin, African and Caribbean artists based in London, although it once held performances from classic alternative bands such as The Clash and Pink Floyd. At present, it continues to host an up and coming number of musicians originating from the greater London area.
The Vortex: Fans of Jazz cannot miss this theatre, which boasts performances every night of the week. Its interior is admittedly bizarre, featuring various themes and motifs from across several decades. Improvorchestra is common here, and the institution has assisted countless musicians find their way to careers. This is a strictly not-for-profit organization; tickets are cheap.
