Getting Ready For Your Baby

Having a child is one of the biggest life changing things that we do as having a child impacts on our entire life. You can never be truly prepared to become a parent as every child is different and people deal with things in different ways. There are preparations that you can do though in your life to help keep your child healthy and also get your home ready for the arrival of your bundle of joy. Making sure that you eat a balanced and healthy diet as well as getting plenty of exercise is important for all of us, not only people who are pregnant. Getting into a routine of diet and exercise will help to keep you healthy as well as your child, meaning you can pass on a healthy habit to your children.

Diet

A lot of us eat food which is convenient as everybody is in a rush now days and claims not to have any time. Pre prepared foods and take away food is ok for an occasional treat, but they are extremely unhealthy over an extended period of time. We need to control the amount of fats and preservatives as well as additives that we eat to stay fit and healthy. If you look on the internet you will be able to find 1000’s of recipes which can be prepared in less than 20 minutes, using fresh ingredients and controlling exactly what you and your family are putting into your bodies. The food does not need to be boring either as there are lots of things you can eat which are good for you if prepared and cooked healthily. When you are pregnant you do not need to significantly increase the amount that you eat as your body can get all of the nutrition it needs from a balanced and healthy diet.

Exercise

Exercise is important for everyone and most of us could do with doing a lot more of it. Even when you are pregnant there are exercises that you can do which are good for you and will not harm your baby. Swimming is probably the best example as you get to exercise all of the major muscle groups whilst at the same time it is low impact as your bodyweight is supported by the water, and you are not pounding the joints. You can also try Aerobics, Palates or Yoga and get yourself a book or DVD so that you can do this at home. You can even take the dog out for a long brisk walk as they will definitely appreciate it.

Wardrobe

It is hard to plan your wardrobe far in advance when you are pregnant as you are not sure how big you are going to get. If you do see a maternity clothing sale with some larger clothes, it still may be an idea to choose something which you like the look of and would be comfortable to wear. With all of the changes that will happen to your body, being comfortable is going to be very important. This may mean getting a bigger supportive bra as your breasts swell and also a comfortable pair of shoes which give you plenty of support. Ankles and legs can swell, so you do not want to wear anything too constricting.

The House

You can make changes around the house to prepare for when your child is going to be crawling and walking. This may mean getting a baby gate and having locks for cupboards installed. Safety plugs are another good idea, and you really need to get down on your hands and knees and see what is going to catch a baby’s eye. You will need to make sure that any fires or radiators are adequately blocked to make sure they do not burn themselves. You may need to get pets used to changes as well, keeping dogs downstairs or maybe even outside, depending on your climate. Just as you do not really learn to drive until you have passed your test and drive your car alone on the road, you cannot prepare yourself too much to become a parent. It is a learning curve which you need to take one day at a time.
