Stay Fit and Healthy for a Happy Living

Staying fit and healthy is a combination and integration of both mind and body. Our thoughts, habits and beliefs are the drivers of our actions. This is especially true when it comes to maintaining our health. Start by doing an inventory of your health habits and beliefs.

You might list the following:

  • Ask yourself: What foods do I eat? Do I eat a balance of the three food groups, carbohydrates, proteins and fats?

  • What are my eating habits that prevent me from being healthy?

  • Do I believe in exercise? What is my exercise routine?

  • Do I “truly believe” that I can maintain a healthy lifestyle?Once you've made a list, you must then work out a program that will specify exactly how you will carry it out. Let’s start with diet.

  • First - water. Our bodies are 70% water. Water is essential for maintaining our bodily functions. Lack of water will cause dehydration that can make us dizzy, fatigued and lose energy. Start then, by eliminating soda and drinking a healthy glass of water instead. Soda is loaded with sugar and sweeteners that can set off diabetic reactions in our bodies. Sugar makes the body produce more insulin. This leads to a condition known as “insulin resistance.” The sugar then accumulates in the liver and causes us to gain weight.

  • Diet. Eliminate the sugar in your snacks. Instead of cookies, crackers, pastries or bread, try an apple, or a hand full of nuts or some yogurt. We often have our snacks when we are watching TV or just relaxing. We don’t move enough to burn off the extra calories.

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. Have a salad with your meal. Balance any carbs with vegetables. Fruits are the “cleansers” of the body.

They help to maintain healthy skin remove toxins. Next, we establish our exercise program. You must be committed to it and do it on a regular basis. Joining an exercise program is a good way to start. You have a rigorous workout with few breaks that stimulate cardio and muscle tone at the same time. You also have the opportunity to meet new people and socialize with them.Exercise helps your body move the food through your intestinal tract. This increase in metabolism is crucial to burning fat calories. Your goal is to develop the “habit” of exercise. It must be on-going, year after year. Maintain a healthy mind.

Here are a few tips:

  • Take at least 15 minutes each day just to relax and wind down.

  • Meditate. Use this time to clear your mind of unwanted thoughts. This will help relieve stress.

  • Read. Reading is another activity the will help clear your mind and let you relax.

Staying healthy and fit is a lifetime commitment. Set these thoughts in motion. The more you eat right and exercise right the more this becomes a “habit” These habits become easier and easier as we do them and you realize that staying healthy and fit is easy and fun.
