Okay, some can also argue that fashion is about designer brands and all that expensive stuff. While those things can be fancy, fashion can also be other things than that. Having style does not necessarily equate to having money. Even if you have all those pricely items, certain things can still not look too well on you. This also does not mean that some people can't look good. It's just that, you totally need to know which suits you, and which stuff don't. It's a fact of life that some things could work out for the best, while others won't.
This is why there are some basic fashion styles and tips that are actually the most effective than others. For example, one of the things that you should always keep in mind is that, you have to know yourself first, or at least have an idea what are the things you like and you don't. This can easily help you when it comes to fashion, because what you wear and how you wear it makes a difference.
Take a mini-dress for example. Some girls may find it perfectly fine to wear something that is skin tight, while others don't. The dress may be pretty when it's on a hanger, but if you don't wear it with the right attitude and confidence, it may look awful on you, right?
Another thing is that the fit also counts. There are trends that tend to require baggier or smaller sizes, but this does not mean that you should go for it without thinking. Again, some folks may look well with an oversized top, while others may look like they're going to bed in it. Some pull the out of bed look with confidence, though, so again, you can't just jump on one trend to another, which is basically, another fashion/style tip.
You may have already heard this a million times before, but trends tend to come and go. Even top designers will tell you that it is not the best idea to follow them religiously. Some may argue, though, that these designers start trends through their seasonal collections, but hey, if they don't release new stuff regularly, the whole industry can stagnate and people could get bored. What most of them are saying is that some trends tend to also release timeless pieces. These things could be excellent additions to your wardrobe, something that can be worn for a long time even if they're not in the current season's collections.
Having a good friend who knows you a lot can also be a great fashion asset. How? Well, they could give you great tips on what suits you and which items are totally "like you". Getting an opinion could be very helpful, you see. Especially since they could see you and give you unbiased feedbacks.
If you're still developing your own brand of style, these could be the most helpful things to keep in mind. Even if you already have established your own sense of style, it could still be helpful, even.
